S. Nicomedes, Presb. M., (15. Sept. al. 1. Juni). Dieser Priester und Martyrer, zu Rom, ein Jünger des hl. Petrus, welcher der hl. Petronilla (s.d.) in ihrem Todeskampfe für Christus beistand, mag etwa um d.J. 90 unter Domitianus gelitten haben. Nach dem Mart. Rom. erwiderte er auf den Befehl, den Göttern zu opfern: »Ich opfere nur dem allmächtigen Gott, der im Himmel herrscht«, worauf er so lange mit bleiernen Stöcken geschlagen wurde, bis er verschied. Sein Leichnam wurde von der Sublicischen Brücke in die Tiber geworfen. Er erhielt seine Ruhestätte an der Nomentanischen Straße. Wir haben von ihm doppelte Acten, wovon aber die einen verdächtig, die andern völlig unglaubwürdig sind, weßhalb wir längere Auszüge unterlassen. Seine Reliquien wurden vom hl. Papste Paschalis I. in die Kirche der hl. Praxedis überbracht. (Piazza, II. 161.) Auch zu Mailand, zu Parma und zu Lucca glaubt man solche zu besitzen. In Mainz war ihm früher eine Kirche geweiht. (V. 5. 12.) Am 1. Juni wurde zu Rom alljährlich das Einweihungsfest einer nach ihm genannten Kirche begangen. Auch ein Cömeterium seines Namens befand sich ehedem zu Rom. (Baron. not.) Er wird gewöhnlich zugleich mit der hl. Petronilla verehrt und angerufen. Auf Abbildungen trägt er eine Knute mit Stacheln.
