S. Ascholius (Ascholus, Ascolius), (30. Dec.) Vom Griech. ἄσχολος = unmüßig, beschäftigt etc. – Der hl. Bischof Ascholius von Thessalonika stammte aus Kappadozien und verließ die Welt und sein Vaterland, um in einer Einöde von Achara ein verborgenes Leben zu führen. Nach einigen Jahren wurde er jedoch wegen des großen Rufes, den sein heiliges Leben genoß, auf den erzbischöflichen Stuhl von Thessalonika erhoben. Er bewahrte durch die Kraft seines Gebetes Macedonien vor den Einfällen der Gothen. Als Kaiser Theodosius im Jahre 380 zu Thessalonika erkrankte, spendete ihm Ascholius die Taufe, worauf er wieder genas. (Mg.)
