1S. Benjamin, Patr. (19. Dec. al. 5. Febr.) Vom Hebr. Benjamin = Sohn der Rechten. – Der hl. Benjamin war der 12. und jüngste Sohn des Patriarchen Jakob, von der Rachel, welche ihn wegen der schweren Geburt Benoni d.h. Sohn meines Schmerzens (Schmerzensohn) nannte und nach seiner Geburt starb. (I. Mos. 35, 16–18.) Der Vater aber nannte ihn Benjamin = Sohn der Rechten, d.h. auf welchen ich mich in meinem Alter mit der rechten Hand lehnen kann. Doch kann es auch einen vorzüglich geliebten Sohn bedeuten, und dieß paßt auch auf Benjamin, indem ihn Jakob überaus liebte und ihn aus Besorgniß nicht mit den übrigen Söhnen nach Aegypten reisen ließ (I. Mos. 42, 4. 13). Bei den Lateinern wird Benjamin nicht verehrt, wohl aber bei den Griechen, welche sein Andenken mit dem der übrigen Patriarchen des israelitischen Volkes am 19. Dec. feiern.
