41Alphonsus III., Herzog von Este und später Kapuziner, war der Sohn des Cäsar von Este und der Virginia von Medici. Er war 1591 geboren und heirathete schon nach 16 Jahren die Isabella von Savoyen. Im Jahre 1623 übernahm er als Alphons I. die Regierung des Herzogthums Modena und herrschte anfangs tyrannisch über seine Unterthanen. Allein der Tod seiner Gemahlin brachte in ihm eine Sinnesänderung hervor. Nachdem er nun mehrere Wohlthätigkeitsanstalten gegründet hatte, dankte er im Jahre 1629 zu Gunsten seines Sohnes Franz I. ab und wurde Kapuziner im Kloster zu Marano. Er erfüllte unter dem Namen Fr. Joannes Baptista alle Pflichten eines eifrigen Mönches und starb im Jahre 1644 zu Castelnovo im Geruche der Heiligkeit. (Mg.)
