Martha, S. (3)

3S. Martha, V. M. (22. al. 23. Febr.) Diese hl. Martha wird nach der Angabe d. Boll. zu Astorga (Asturica Augusta, Asturica, Asturgia, ehedem Rena) als Jungfrau und Martyrin verehrt. Geschichtlich sichere Nachrichten über sie sind nicht vorhanden. Eine alte Ueberlieferung sagt aber, sie habe während der decianischen Verfolgung, ungefähr im J. 251, unter dem Proconsul Paternus gelitten. Dieser, von natürlichem Mitgefühl für die jugendliche und geistvolle Bekennerin Christi durchdrungen, wünschte ihr das Leben zu erhalten und wollte sie seinem Sohne zur Frau geben. Sie blieb aber, ungeachtet er sie foltern und mit Knütteln schlagen ließ, standhaft. Es erschien ihr Christus und stärkte sie. Sie starb durch das Schwert. In Riva do Sil, nach Migne aber in Astorga, soll sich ihr hl. Leib, welcher anfänglich an einen unreinen Ort geworfen wurde, befinden. (Der Sil ist ein Nebenfluß des Minho und entspringt an der nördlichen Grenze des Königreichs Leon.) Gams (K.-G. Sp.) erwähnt diese Heilige nicht. (III. 361 et 362).
