81Martinus de Sarmiento (30. Aug.), war Bischof von Puebla de los Angelos in Mexico, und heißt bei Artur »selig«. Von Kindheit an sehr fromm, trat er als Jüngling zu Toledo in den Orden des hl. Franz von Assisi und schiffte sich, nachdem er eine Zeit lang daselbst als Prediger und Beichtvater gewirkt hatte, mit mehreren Mitbrüdern als Missionär nach Amerika ein. Nur aus Gehorsam nahm er hier die bischöfliche Würde an, während er seine Lebensweise und seine Strengheiten noch verstärkte, und seine Thätigkeit als Missionär mit demselben Eifer fortsetzte. Er starb im J. 1560. (VI. 543).
