S. Merovaeus, Mon. (22. Oct. al. 31. Aug.). Der hl. Meroväus (auch Moroneus, Maroneus und Meroutuus genannt) war Mönch in Bobbio (gegründet um d.J. 612 durch den hl. Columban) unter dem Abt Attala. Er blühte am Anfang des siebenten Jahrhunderts und war ein Schüler des hl. Bertulphus2. Einst mußte er auf Anordnung seines Abtes in die Gegend von Tortona (Dertona). Am Flusse Scrivia (Hira, Yra) fand er einen Hain mit Götzen und zündete ihn an. Darüber ergriff ihn die Menge, schlug ihn halbtodt und warf ihn ins Wasser. Er entkam durch ein Wunder dem Untergange, und ging, als wäre nichts vorgefallen, unversehrt in sein Kloster zurück. Außer dieser heroischen That ist weiter nichts über ihn auf uns gekommen. Nicht einmal die Zeit seines Todes, welchen Einige ins J. 640 setzen, ist gewiß. Im J. 1483 wurden seine Reliquien erhoben. Die Boll. und die Benedictiner-Martyrologien behandeln ihn am 22. Oct., Andere am 31. Aug. (IX. 614–617.)
