3S. Romanus Thaumaturgus (9. Febr. al. 31. März, 27. Nov.), ein Mönch zu Antiochia in Syrien, lebte im 5. Jahrh. und war aus Rhosus (Rhossi) in Cilicien gebürtig. Er lebte außerhalb der Stadt Antiochia auf einem Berge, wo er in einer engen Höhle bis ins hohe Greisenalter ein strenges und armes Leben führte, ohne Seine Speise war Brod mit Salz, sein Getränk Wasser. Unter dem härenen Kleide trug er einen eisernen Bußring. Diejenigen, welche zu ihm kamen, pflegte er zur brüderlichen Liebe und Frömmigkeit zu ermahnen. Ihn gesehen zu haben, war Vielen ein Antrieb zur Gottesfurcht. Seine Fürbitte erwies sich so kräftig, daß er den Namen »Wunderthäter« erhielt. (II. 295 u. 296.)
